“Hello, uh, this is Takehiro Hashimoto speaking, may I please speak with Keiko Nakagami?”

“That is me.”

“Uh. Thank you very much for coming to lunch with my family and I the other day.”

“No. No. Thank you very much, Hashimoto-san.”

“Uh. Call me Take.”

“I’m sorry, ‘Take.’”

“It was very nice meeting you.”

“Yes, it was very nice meeting you as well.”

“Uh, the restaurant served a good lunch.”

“___”

“Uh. Would you like to go out on the weekend. Perhaps, uh, during the day?”

“Afternoon?”

“Uh, afternoon…that’s okay?”

“That’s okay.”

“Uh, then good-bye.”

“Take?”

“Uh?”

“What day?”

“Uh, Sunday.”

“Then bye-bye.”

Had he been more nervous on the telephone than he was in person at the omiai? Or was he just distracted? Perhaps that was his phone manner. Keiko had to admit that when he called she was very pleased. Of all the losers she had lunched with in hotel restaurants he was the most promising. Tall, handsome, not totally shy. And she liked the gap in his teeth. But what kind of wimp suggests a daytime date? Talk about playing it conservative.

Still, she was looking forward to it. She found herself planning an outfit in advance. A conservative pair of tan pants and a simple brown blouse. Gold chain belt. And her new Chanel pumps.
